Wise Words

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered.
Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest person with the biggest ideas can be
shot down by the smallest person with the smallest mind.
Think big anyway.
What you spend years building may
be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack if you help them.
Help people anyway.
Give the world the best you have
and you might get kicked in the teeth.

Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

Our Salaf

Hassan Al Basri said:

We laugh and yet – who knows? – perhaps Allah has looked at some of our works and said: “I will not accept anything from you.” Woe to you, son of Adam! Can you fight Allah? Whoever disobeys Allah is fighting Him. By Allah! I have met seventy veterans of Badr. Most of their garments were wool. Had you seen them you would have said they are crazy, and had they seen the best among you they would have said: “Those people will have no part in the Hereafter.” Had they seen the worst among you they would have said: “Those people do not believe in the Day of Reckoning.” I have seen people for whom this world was cheaper than the dust under their feet. I have seen people the like of whom would come home at night, not finding more than his own portion of food, and yet say: “I shall not put all of this into my belly. I shall certainly give some away for Allah’s sake.” Then he would give away some of his food in charity, even if he were more in need of it than its recipient.

speaking without ‘ilm

Aboo Bakr as-Siddeeq (radiallaahu ‘anhu) was asked a question about an ayah from the Book of Allaah and he said in reply,

Which earth will carry me? Which sky will shade me? If I say about an ayah from the Book of Allaah other than what Allaah, the Perfect and Most High, intended.

[At-Tabari 1:78]

Sunni

“It has become famous upon the tongues of the people of San’aa that the Mujtahid scholars and those who take from them and are connected to them in these days are called Sunni. This is a title for which the competitors compete for attributing a person to the Sunnah is the greatest testimony that he is someone who embraced it. However in the terminology of these hizbeyeen (partisans), it is applied to one who has enmity to Ali and allegiance to Mu’awiyah. This is a slander against the people of knowledge and a transgression against the Muslim. It is used only upon the tongues of those who are more like animals than anything else..”

Imaam ash Shawkaani in Adab at Talab wa Muntaaha al Arab (pg. 85-87)

Silent Da’wah

Da’wah through good character…

Hassan Al Basree (Rahimahillah) had a neighbor who was a Christian. This neighbor had a toilet on the roof of his apartment and it used to leak through a hole in the roof of Hassan Al Basree’s apartment. Hassan placed a bucket beneath the hole to catch the urine that would leak through it and discard the contents at the end of each day. This continued for 20 years! Then one day, Hassan fell ill and his Christian neighbor came to visit him. When he entered, the neighbor noticed the bucket of urine that was leaking through the hole in his ceiling and asked Hassan astoundingly: “How long have you been tolerating this harm from me?!” Hassan replied: “For 20 years!” So the Christian neighbor took off his belt (which was the clothing of the Christians during that time) and accepted Islam!!!

Regret…

It is reported that Talq b. Habîb – Allâh have mercy on him – said, “The right of Allâh is too great and heavy for the creation to fulfill and the blessings of Allâh are too many to enumerate, but you should remain repentant, morning and evening.”

Ibn Abî Al-Dunyâ, Al-Tawbah article 62.

The great ascetic (zaahid) Shaqîq Al-Balakhî – Allâh have mercy on him – was once asked, “What is the mark of [true] repentance?” He replied, “Continued crying over past sins, deep fear of falling into them again, staying away from bad company, and keeping the company of good people.”

Abû Bakr Al-Daynûrî, Al-Mujâlasah wa Jawâhir Al-‘Ilm article 2645.

The Door of Islaam

Hafiz Abul Qasim ibn ‘Asakir has documented in Tarikh Dimashq that Imam an-Nasa’i was asked about Mu’awiyah. His reply was:

“Islam is like a house with a door. The door of Islam is the Sahaba. Whoever speaks ill of the Sahaba seeks but to harm Islam, just like one who knocks a door to enter a house. As for Mu’awiyah, whoever speaks ill of him seeks to find a way to speak ill of the Sahaba.”

Night Vigil

Abdul-Aziz ibn abu Dawud (rahimullah) would spread out his bed and put his hand on it saying, “How soft you are! But the bed of Paradise is softer than you!” Then he would stand up to pray until Fajr.

Fire Alarm

It is reported that Bashr b. Al-Hârith said,

“I was once with Al-Fudayl b. ‘Ayyâd in Makkah. He sat with us until midnight, then went and did tawâf until the morning. I said, ‘Abû ‘Alî! Won’t you sleep?’ He replied, ‘Woe to you! And is there anyone who hears a mention of the Fire and then feels like sleeping!?’”

Abû Bakr Al-Daynûrî, Al-Mujâlasah wa Jawâhir Al-‘Ilm, article 723.

Praying and fasting without end

The following is taken from the Tafseer of Imaam ibn Kathir for Surah Imraan(chapter 3) verse 200 “(O you who believe! Endure and be more patient, and Rabitu)”

Al-Hafiz Ibn `Asakir mentioned in the biography of `Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak, that Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Abi Sakinah said,

“While in the area of Tarsus, `Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak dictated this poem to me when I was greeting him goodbye. He sent the poem with me to Al-Fudayl bin `Iyad in the year one hundred and seventy,

`O he who worships in the vicinity of the Two Holy Masjids! If you but see us, you will realize that you are only jesting in worship. He who brings wetness to his cheek with his tears, should know that our necks are being wet by our blood.

He who tires his horses without purpose, know that our horses are getting tired in battle. Scent of perfume is yours, while our scent is the glimmer of spears and the stench of dust [in battle].

We were narrated about in the speech of our Prophet, an authentic statement that never lies. That the dust that erupts by Allah’s horses and which fills the nostrils of a man shall never be combined with the smoke of a raging Fire.

This, the Book of Allah speaks among us that the martyr is not dead, and the truth in Allah’s Book cannot be denied.’

I met Al-Fudayl Ibn `Iyad in the Sacred Masjid and gave him the letter. When he read it, his eyes became tearful and he said, `Abu `Abdur-Rahman (`Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak) has said the truth and offered sincere advice to me.

‘ He then asked me, `Do you write the Hadith’ I said, `Yes.’ He said, `Write this Hadith as reward for delivering the letter of Abu `Abdur-Rahman to me.

He then dictated, `Mansur bin Al-Mu`tamir narrated to us that Abu Salih narrated from Abu Hurayrah that a man asked, `O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a good deed that will earn me the reward of the Mujahidin in Allah’s cause.’ The Prophet said, (Are you able to pray continuously and fast without breaking the fast) The man said, `O Messenger of Allah! I cannot bear it.’ The Prophet said, (By He in Whose Hand is my soul! Even if you were able to do it, you will not achieve the grade of the Mujahidin in Allah’s cause. Did you not know that the horse of the Mujahid earns rewards for him as long as it lives.)
